Hello, If we are trying to determine how far our bullet is going, which impacts TOF, effects of gravity and atmosphere, etc -- we talk about the target being 600 yards away (or whatever we are shooting at). But that is the distance for line of sight -- but the bullet travels along a longer ballistic path, correct? So our bullet is actually going 650 yards (or something longer than 600y line of sight). When would this matter? Do we need to be talking about the actual flight path when we get past 1000 yards? Thank you again for the great class. I'll try not to bring so much suck to the next class. John -- .338LM The path of the bullet is figured in by the ballistic calculator. The only time you worry about the path of the bullet is when you have obstacles that you have to shoot over or under.

When TOF is calculated, we only concern ourselves with the Line of Sight distance. How long it takes to get from our muzzle to the target, no matter what route it takes to get there. The bullet does travel the parabolic curve as you observed, but our calculator is reporting the TOF for the Line of Sight distance because it is this time that gravity has to act on the bullet, thus creating the parabolic curve. The projectile could not travel in the straight line Line of Sight path, not even in a vacuum, so the length of its path is of no consequence, only its time of flight.
Thanks for inquiring.

Our last two classes went very well. Thanks to those who attended and I hope all who did learned and expanded their skill set. A lot of them were ready to qualify by the end of the class. And, as I understand, today there were quite a few shooters qualifying for the 600 yard mid-range. That is good to hear.
Our next Mid-Range Class will not likely be until the spring. If interested, call the office to get on the list.
Shoot safe, shoot often.

Hello, I am planning on taking the mid-range class (On the waiting list) but I might try and qualify for shooting 200-600 before the class. What are the skills that are on the qualification test?
Thanks, Chris Erhard

Chris,
The 600 Qualification is essentially this:
- Written Test consisting of 30 questions.
- Shooting Test:
200 Yards: Fire a first round which must be within 2 MOA of intended POI Fire two more rounds which must be within 2 MOA of first.
300 Yards: Adjustments must be dialed on scope Fire a first round which should be within 2 MOA of intended POI If not, make adjustments for a second shot Fire two more rounds which must be within 2 MOA of first shot that is within 2 MOA of intended POI
600 Yards: Adjustments must be dialed on the scope Fire a first round which should be within 2 MOA of intended POI If not, make adjustments for a second shot Fire two more rounds which must be within 2 MOA of first shot that is within 2 MOA of intended POI
200 Yards: Return to original 200 yard zero and fire one shot which must be within 2 MOA of the first 200 yard shot.
Contact the office to arrange for a day and time.
Good luck.

Voss, Thanks for the info. Is there anyway to get the written test questions?

Chris, I did the test a new member last year, and it's nothing too difficult. Unless you are a completely new to shooting past 200 yards, then you will do fine on the day with respect to the test. I would not stress about it.
